The Massanutten Western Slope is private owned and riders must carry a valid annual pass or purchase a day pass ($10) or week pass ($25) from the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition.

Overview

This route is most fun when ridden clockwise, but it is not officially a one-way trail. This is a good trail to add on after you've completed the Green Loop if you are looking to tackle a step up in challenging terrain. You'll find some short rock garden sections, creek crossings, berms, and fun flow going downhill.

Description

Recommended loops on the Western Slope are all blazed. As a rule of thumb for easy navigation, follow the green blazes for the Green Loop, blue blazes for the Blue Loop, pink blazes for the Pink Loop and gold blazes for the Gold Loop. To avoid repeating the phrase "follow the blue blazes," assume that most of the intersections will be blazed blue.

Starting from the parking lot, head up the hill past the gate, and turn left on the gravel road past the pavilion. Continue north on the gravel, and turn right onto some gravel doubletrack up the hill to cross.

This route climbs uphill to cross Lower Hanenkahm and drop into Chimney trail. Continue to where Chimney exits the woods onto a bit of gravel and then turn left onto Prologue. After the creek crossing, continue straight to Little Monkey, cross another creek, and climb up to cross the road for the final descent on Lower Homestead.
