Description

The trailhead starts at the end of Cranford Way. The very beginning is shaded by some of the only trees on the trail. There is a switchback, and the grade is relatively easy. Soon it steepens, and after the left turn, the trail becomes very steep, with a max grade 22%. The steep climbing is sustained for about 200 vertical feet, and the slippery and rutted terrain will force all but the strongest climbers to hike-a-bike the rest until the top.

Eventually, the trail starts to level out, and you can find the only other shaded part of the trail. Look behind you and you can see a great view of the East Bay flatlands. There is only about 50 feet more climbing now, and it is less steep. Soon you reach the top, with an interesting rock labyrinth built on the ground. Despite the challenging climb, this is the best way up Dunsmuir Hill. Another route is available to blast back down the hill.
