Overview
Combines Green Mountain, Mount Falcon, Lair O' the Bear, Matthews Winters, and Dakota Ridge into a Front Range tour. This ride has a bit of everything: flowy singletrack, chunky climbs and descents, great views, and varied terrain.
Bring lots of water as this can get really hot. You'll pass the gas station in Morrison twice if you need to refill on anything.
Need to Know
Bring lots of water and start early; this ride has lots of sun exposure and a fair amount of climbing.
Restrooms located at the bottom of Green Mountain, Falcon, Lair, and Matthew Winters. You can also stop at the gas station as you enter Morrison as you'll pass this twice. Great place to catch a few minutes of A/C and an ice cream sandwich.
Description
Start at Green Mountain parking lot off of 470.
Ride the outer loop of
Green Mountain Loop, finishing on
Box o' Rox. Before crossing back over the pedestrian bridge that connects the trail to the parking lot, turn left on the paved path that heads south towards Morrison.
Ride the paved trail past the drag strip, cross carefully at the gas station, and take the bike path up through Morrison, making a left onto CO-8 right after downtown. Ride the shoulder, making a right onto Forest Avenue, followed by a right onto Vine Street. Ride through the parking lot and start the climb up Falcon.
At the top of Falcon, continue through the top parking lot and take Mt. Falcon Road past where it becomes Nambe and then Picutis Roads. If you follow the flow of the road, you'll be fine with your first turn being a left onto Okhay Road, and promptly another where it turns into Comanche Road. This will dump you out on Parmalee Gulch Road. Make a right on Parmalee and ride the shoulder gradually uphill to the top of Lair. Use caution as the shoulder is narrow in parts and there are sharp corners which makes it more difficult for cars to see you.
Right after the road levels out, you'll see Pence Park on your left. Make sure your suspension is unlocked and take the trail to the right and begin your descent of Lair, finishing at the bottom lot by Bear Creek Road. More outhouses here if needed and a good place to stop before riding the canyon back down to the town of Morrison. Turn right (downhill) onto Bear Creek Road and take it all the way back to town. Be aware of passing vehicles and debris on the shoulder.
Once back in downtown Morrison, continue until you make a left on Stone Street and another immediate left onto Mt. Vernon Avenue. From here, you start a steady climb on the shoulder up to Matthew Winters Park. Ride
Red Rocks Trail with some really fun features.
Continue on
Red Rocks Trail after it crosses the Alameda Parkway and again at Red Rocks TRAIL Road. At Red Rock PARK Road, make a left and continue for roughly 150 meters until it T-bones into Mt. Vernon Road (called Hogback Road at this point). You'll have passed this point already on your climb up to Matthew Winters. At the intersection, take the trail across the street and start your last climb of the day up the backside of the Hogsback on
Red Rocks Trail. Once the switchbacks start, you're almost done!
Descend
Dakota Ridge Trail carefully and ride the road down to Rooney Road back to the parking lot.
