Description

Upper mountain trail from Waimea to Mauna Kea access road. This trail is maintained by the state. Overall, it is in great condition and, depending on your skill level, COULD be done on a gravel bike.

One option you have for accessing it is this: take the public bus to Waimea, then bike this trail to its end. Then ride your bike 20 miles down Saddle Road back into Hilo. Saddle Road is steep and paved, so you just coast for probability 19 of the 20 miles. Note the trail is bidirectional.

Brutal ride - first half is exhausting with lots of up and down. After halfway, road becomes easier and smoother
