Need to Know
A popular hiking trail and has some blind corners and fast sections. Use caution!
Description
This trail is another product of the CCC from the 1930's and probably the parks oldest established trail. It can be travelled in either direction and there are connectors near the high point of the trail to connect to the horse trails and camping areas.
In the direction shown, start out by climbing the stairs and then turning right and heading up a very steep climb with some short stairs thrown in for good measure. The climb up is not that long and once you get to the bench at the top, feel free to soak in the views from the top of the bluffs over the Missouri River while you catch your breath.
From here, you can turn around and go back down for a fast, fun and steep technical downhill with a few switchbacks and the stairs you came up. Otherwise continue on the same direction where the trail drops quickly back into the trees and then traverses a steep hillside with some very narrow sections with some exposure and a root section.
Once the trail meets up with the connectors that take you up and out, stay right to continue on Corps. The trail turns downhill the vast majority of the remainder and is fairly open and fast. It flows well and after the brief climb it drops down steeper one more short time before dumping you out into the riverfront RV campground.
Check your speed at the end as the entry sign is not placed the best and you may be flying into someone's campground.
