Need to Know
The trail was completely rebuilt, including re-routed sections, by the BLM and volunteers in April 2021.
Description
Black Canyon Trail primarily provides access to local bouldering and sport climbing routes at The Box Recreation Area. Please be courteous to hikers and climbers and check your speed, especially on the western segment where you are likely to meet other users.
The trail is open to non-motorized travel and provides a fun loop with the
Chupadera Crossing Jeep Trail. The trail is gravity-assisted when ridden from west to east, but is also climbable in the reverse direction.
The western portion is rockier and tighter before briefly entering a slab rock section in the middle of the arroyo. The most navigable route through the slab rock generally stays to the north side of the wash. Look for a gate on the right hand side after navigating the slab rock section.
Past the gate, the eastern portion of the trail is easier, with a gravel base winding through the higher ground of the watershed. A trailhead and two-track connector on the east end return you to the county road.
