Description
A map of this trail section is here:

Starting at Happy Valley Rd. and 5th Ave, the trail follows the west side of the CAP canal, along a right-of-way outside the fence that blocks access to the closed canal access road. There are unmarked rusty brown posts indicating the trail location at various points. The first mile of the trail is rough and not well maintained.
After a tunnel crossing 19th Ave, the trail becomes better maintained. The trail crosses the road at 23rd Ave., the only road crossing where traffic is crossed. After crossing the Skunk Creek wash, the trail crosses I-17 on a sturdy overpass.
Continuing west, the trail passes the north side of the Deem Hills. There is one very steep hill to ride (or walk) before the trail descends to the north end of 51st Ave. To the north at this point is access to the State Land encompassing the Pyramid Peak area with many unmarked trails. The CAP trail continues west and officially ends at the northern most point of Pyramid Peak Parkway.
The right-of-way continues northwest from this point along the canal, but begins to become considerably rougher as it goes. Eventually this rougher trail connects to the northeast corner of the Paloma Preserve.
