Features Views

Family Friendly Mellow terrain, wide trails and great views make this this a great family friendly loop close to town.

Overview

A mellow singletrack loop close to downtown packed with views of the Slate River and surrounding peaks. Most of the trail is flowing singletrack great for the beginner mountain bike rider. These trails can be linked with others in the area to cater to riders looking for more technicality and distance.

Need to Know

The upper parking area near Peanut Lake is handicap only. This trail is a very popular hiking and biking trail.

Description

Start out on the road heading NW toward Peanut Lake with some mellow climbing until you reach signage for the Lower Loop Trail right above the Peanut Lake upper parking lot (handicap only). Shortly after starting the Lower Loop Trail, you can choose to stay on a wider path to the left or a singletrack trail that forks right. Both trails parallel each other and end up at the same place a little farther ahead.

A nice mellow trail follows the river for a mile or so until turning left. A little after 3 miles, come to a junction and follow the signage and the dirt road to the left toward Upper Lower Loop trail. Climb up Gunsight Pass road until you reach the Upper Lower Loop Trail junction on the left at 3.7 miles. The trail rolls through some aspens and meanders along the side of the hill. Stay left at the junction with Budd Trail for an easier variation or take a right onto Budd Trail for a little more technical descent back on to Peanut Lake road or Lower Loop trail.

History & Background

You'll pass "The Gronk", the remnants from the old Peanut Lake mine, and some buildings with weird graffiti on your way to the upper parking lot.

Starts with some road riding, sharing road with cars. Trail is beautiful (easy uphill, Aspen groves). It is very easy, great for a mild ride. 8mi — 1h 26m
