Overview
This is good loop to explore the Signal Peak area and is more exciting than the
Signal Peak Easy Loop. Close to Western Colorado University, this is a popular area for bikers and hikers. The loop has great views of the Gunnison valley below and of the rolling grasslands and mesas.
Need to Know
Parking available for 6-7 cars. No restrooms. Seasonal closures for sage-grouse conservation.
Description
Start out on
Chicken Wing trail, which is singletrack that winds its way north up the hill for a little over a mile and a half. Come to a junction with
Shoelace trail that contains some switchbacks to continue your climb. Take in the views of Signal Peak and surrounding sage covered hills.
Almost to the top of Signal Peak, start
South Rim trail that contains the last main bit of climbing before a fine descent on a flowy, narrow trail that traverses the south side of Signal Peak. After a fast downhill section, watch for a fork in the trail. Take the right hand fork to
Duane's World to finish out the loop.
Duane's World is a fast trail that is majority descending through a sea of sage. You'll speed through sagebrush as you try not to blow out the flat, semi-loose corners and explode yourself. The trail terminates back at the parking area.
