Need to Know

This road becomes extremely dangerous to drive in wet conditions.

Description

This road climb makes the best way to pedal your way up to the top of Grafton Mesa. It takes Smithsonian Butte Road up to Wire Mesa and then Grafton. It's a very strenuous climb, so most people choose to drive this road and leave another car at the bottom, or to hire a shuttle service.

If you're going to pedal this to ride a downhill, park at the Grafton Cemetery or the intersection of Smithsonian Butte Rd and Grafton Rd. Once at the bottom of Smithsonian Butte Rd, start uphill on the grueling 5.6 mile climb, gaining 1400 feet of elevation by the top.

The first 1.5 miles are the steepest, and this makes the section known as Cry Baby Hill. After this initial section the slope remains gentler to the top of Grafton Mesa. Once up on the mesa, you can choose from a variety of trails to make your hard-earned descent to the valley below.
