Description
This non-motorized trail is one of the more popular ways in the Boulder River area to access the Continental Divide Trail, as well as Cottonwood Lake and Thunderbolt Mountain. It is popular with hikers and horse riders so make sure to be courteous. The trail is somewhat rocky, but overall not too steep and is easy to follow. Perhaps it follows the route of an old jeep road because although it is now non-motorized, the trail is wide in places, especially closer to the trailhead.
The trailhead is located a couple of miles up FS-1572, a dirt road that comes off Boulder River Road, just opposite Whitehouse Campground. Although there is plenty of parking at the trailhead, some riders might decide to park at the Campground instead, especially if doing a loop via the CDT and Champion Pass.
3.5 miles up the trail you'll come to the lovely Cottonwood Lake, and the junction with the CDT Connector Trail. This trail is the official way that bikes can connect with the CDT going south, without crossing into the Recommended Wilderness Area (RWA).
A little further up, near the North end of the lake, the trail junctions with the Continental Divide Trail (CDT). To continue on from here in either direction is not permitted by bicycle due to the RWA. The summit of Thunderbolt Mountain is a 3 mile hike from here, following the CDT North, followed by a short summit trail.
