Overview
This route is the perfect 1-2 hour ride for folks that want a good taste of copper city riding, without having to go down anything too steep or technical. It consists of an easy loop lower down that has lots of flow, and a harder loop up top that is steeper, more rocky and has moderate technical features. Be aware that the upper loop has a few sections considered somewhere between hard intermediate and easy advanced.
Need to Know
The trailhead has toilets, trail map and a bike repair station. The access road has a couple of steep sections that will be fine for most vehicles in good conditions, but you may need AWD if conditions are poor.
Description
The route starts from the main Copper City Trailhead on the
Green Eagle Trail. This is a multi-directional trail, but it has a primary direction of counter-clockwise, so we will ascend on Green Eagle South. This side of the trail has a perfect gradient for ascending with big smooth swooping curves. There are a few tricky spots up near the top, but overall it is non-technical.
At the top of Green Eagle you take the High Ore connector, which apart from the access road, is the only connecting trail to the upper trails. The connector will lead you to a junction and onto
Lower High Ore Trail which is the only uphill trail until the next junction with
Motherlode South Trail. Up until this point the trail isn't too difficult, and at this junction you'll turn left and start the upper loop of the route.
The remainder of your climbing will be on the Motherlode Trail, and will be the most physically demanding part of the route due to steeper gradients and rocky terrain. After several switchbacks you'll gain the ridge where the views are fantastic. You'll pass the junctions of two downhill trails on your left, and then after cresting up and over a summit of sorts you'll reach the junction with Motherlode Trail and turn right twice to descend down
Motherlode South.
Motherlode South is a fun trail with a lot of variety and is a fun descent. The first section descends straight down a ridgeline and has a lot of big rock features to negotiate. The trail then descends down into 2 gullies separated by a short steep climb, and is curvy and flowy. This will take you back to the High Ore Trail Junction where you can follow you tracks back to the top of
Green Eagle Trail.
For the final leg, we will take the Green Eagle North Trail which begins with an easy ascent to slight ridge. From here it's a smooth, fast and slightly sandy descent back to the Trailhead, that includes a few optional small jumps. The gradient is mellow enough that you can get some pedal on, but steep enough for the most part that you don't have to if you're not feeling it.
