Overview
The
Ash Canyon to Kings Canyon Trail was designed and built as a premier singletrack to drive recreation tourism to Carson City, and certainly stands up to its intent. On this full loop, a fire road makes a good climb to start with a regular easy grade. The downhill is entirely singletrack, full of flowy turns at moderate grades. Altogether, this is a fantastic high-desert cross country route for any rider, with expansive views over Carson and the Great Basin.
Description
The route begins with a meandering dirt road between homes. When it pops out of the neighborhood it begins the long fire road climb to the top of Kings Canyon. At the summit, the intersection with the Ash Canyon Trail starts a great downhill, full of flowing turns with a soft surface largely made of decomposed granite. Views from the summit and during the descent are a of pine trees and rocky creeks, with a backdrop of plains and mountains across the Washoe Valley.
The descent is long, at over 5 miles to complete without any drastic change in character the entire time. It's all big fun, and almost all singletrack the entire way back to the parking lot.
