Overview

A joy from end to end! Start up in big pine forest, dive through chaparral chutes, take steep switchbacks under blue oaks, and finish amongst cacti. It's an incredible trail ride--though steep, not for beginners--complete with a big climb up the 33 to complete the loop.

Description

Most folks begin this ride from either Ozena Station (as routed here) or at the top of Big Boulder Trail. If riding as routed: Start up HWY 33, a gentle and relatively unbusy road until the turn for Pine Mountain Ridge Road. Continue climbing on this single lane fire road which is usually closed to cars.

At Pine Mountain Campground (where there is an additional pit toilet) is where you'll start the descent on Big Boulder Trail. It's a steep and incredibly fun downhill with loam, flow, and steep corners throughout. You'll traverse multiple ecotones (pine forest, oak forest, chaparral, desert scrub) and enjoy huge mountainside views en route back to the fire station.

A respectable climb indeed. Trail was worth it though and in good shape for a backcountry LP trail. Most flowy part was the bottom half.
