Description
The West Bluff Trail parallels the
Bill & Marion Certain Trail on top of Green Mountain and intersects with the Bill & Marion Certain at its north and south termini. It also intersects with the Power Line Trail about two-thirds of the way heading south.
The northern two thirds of the trail are quite scenic and flowing. It rolls gently along the bluff, although not so close that it's dangerous if riding at an appropriate speed. Be careful not to pick up too much speed when riding perpendicular towards the bluff, because it will turn on you before you reach the bluff. There are several overlooks along this trail, but the most frequently used one is near the intersection with the Power Line Trail at the power line easement crossing. From this overlook, you can see Bailey Cove, Mathis Mountain, the rocket test stands on Redstone Arsenal and Marshall Space Flight Center, and the Tennessee River as it snakes its way towards the Ohio River. Many a picture has been taken from this overlook.
Continuing south beyond the power line easement, the trail is more technical due to the comparative lack of maintenance on this section of it. It quickly meanders along the bluff back to the Bill & Marion Certain at the Big Cove Overlook. Again, be careful not to pick up too much speed to avoid riding off the 50-foot bluff.
