Overview

The Boneyard Loop is an excellent ride close to town that includes singletrack that can be ridden in either direction. It's great for a lunch or after work ride.

Need to Know

Be aware of mountain bikers, runners and hikers using the trail in both directions. On the lower section of Boneyard, there are some blind curves so keep a heads up when traveling in either direction. Parking is limited at the trailhead so consider parking at a larger lot at the intersection of Bluffs Dr and Mill Rd.

Description

This ride starts at parking area near the intersection of Bluffs Drive and Bellyache Rd. Ride up the hill and notice the green gate as the road bends sharply to the right. This is where you'll exit at the end of the ride.

Continue to follow the road for another 2.35 miles. Look for the trail intersection on the left where the road flattens out. There is a trail marker and medium sized boulder to mark the start of the Boneyard Trail. The first downhill section starts quickly and then takes a sharp left into a rolling singletrack that winds down along a hillside above a large sagebrush meadow. After a short, steep rocky section, you'll ride across the meadow and bear right onto an old doubletrack. 0.93 miles from the start of the Boneyard Trail to here.

From here there are great views of Red Canyon as the route rolls along the doubletrack. After another quick, steep section the trail ducks left back into the sagebrush as it continues to lose elevation. This section of the trail pops out into any open area briefly to intersect with a utility road. Notice a green gate on your left. 0.74 miles from the last intersection to here.

The last section of Boneyard is perhaps the most fun. After crossing the utility road be ready for 1.45 of twisting descent. The trail drops steadily but never becomes too steep, managing an average 5-8% grade. There are two drainage crossings in this section. The trail will exit to the left on an old roadbed and follow it around and up to meet the green gate on Bellyache Road. From there ride down the hill and back to the start of the ride.

History & Background

The Boneyard Trail is the result of a partnership between the Town of Eagle, BLM, ECO Trails and the Greater Eagle community to restore the landscape and provide recreational opportunities in the East Eagle area.
