Overview

Johnny Behind the Rocks (JBR) is the best 3-season cross country MTB trail system near Lander, WY. Home to the annual August MTB race, The Jurassic Classic, the JBR trails wind through pinion pines and junipers along draws and ridges with stunning views of the Wyoming Rockies. Great early and late season riding when the mountains are still too muddy.

Need to Know

Watch out for horses on the trail when you see trailers in the parking lot. Keep gate closed. For a longer ride, include the 1 mile out and back Johnny Falls Trail or the Johnny on Top ridge trail.

Description

This short loop heads up Johnny Draw, climbing good singletrack for a mile to a big open saddle, then winding down and up through sandstone and junipers for another mile to the intersection of 3 trails and a doubletrack. Turn left at the intersection and descend a fast but occasionally sandy .5 mile section to another intersection.

Turn left again, ascending a short sandy singletrack gut buster for 250 yards to another doubletrack intersection. Turn right and continue climbing for 250 yards to gain the Red Ridge. Wind through Junipers for 1/2 mile to the gentle ridge summit. From here the fun is non-stop as you descend a narrow ridgeline for 1.5 miles with beautiful 360 views all the way back to the parking lot.

History & Background

Johnny Draw is the original trail at JBR. All other trail segments were built since 2000 by mountain bikers for mountain bikers.

Fun little area reminiscent of other desert rides we done in Utah. 600 feet of climbing gave us some great views. 4.3mi
