Description
The Red Tail Trail drops approximately 1200' from the
Cranmore Trail to
Hurricane Mountain Road. Although it climbs well, it's most fun ridden downhill! The trail start is signed and leaves north from the
Cranmore Trail, approximately 0.2 miles west from the Cranmore and
Black Cap Trail intersection.
It begins with a short section of tight turns and roots. It starts dropping and enters the first of many previously logged areas. From this point until the bottom section, it's all downhill. You won't need to pedal much and your speed will depend almost entirely on how much you use your brakes.
It soon enters a large, recently clear cut area. Views north are spectacular! It's worth stopping here for a photo or just to appreciate the view. The trail switchbacks across the clear cut with a couple easy rocky bridges and then some rougher, eroded sections.
The trails reenters the woods. There's some really fun trail work here including more rock bridges and a rock armored switchback.
The trail approaches
Hurricane Mountain Road and crosses a small stream on a bridge. This is the most technical section. It makes a couple rocky climbs and side hills above the stream with a little exposure in a couple places. A couple switchbacks bring you down to the stream and then out to the water tank, turn right here for
Hurricane Mountain Road.
