Description

From the main entrance of Pocahontas State Park you'll enter the state park at the park office/kiosk. Please pay the parking fee. From here proceed straight down State Park rd. to the CCC museum.(Follow the Signs) From the CCC Museum Information board located by the bathrooms in front of the museum building, you'll go to the right. This puts you on the Fendley Station trail, which is a gravel road/trail that goes around the entire park. You'll follow this trail for a little over half a mile and you'll see the MTB trail entrance and Information board on the right hand side with maps and distances for all the trails.

There are three separate trails, one of which has a very advanced trail added to it for you adventurous types, and all share the same trailhead. These trails are well marked and are ONE WAY ONLY. Just follow the signs. The Morel Ravine Trail (Red), The Tall Oaks Trail (Blue) which has the Little W. VA trail addition and The Box Turtle Trail (Green).

The Tall Oaks trail is about 5.5 miles long if you start from the Parking lot at the CCC Museum. The trail loop is approximately 4.5 miles. Its a great intermediate level trail. Right from the start you have a down hill section that gets a bit technical due to the "S" shape the trail follows around the trees and all the roots. This trail is full of short climbs and short downhill sections and a lot of fun. A lot of these short climbs are filled with roots. About midway through the trail is a pretty steep climb which can be tricky because of the roots.

At about 3 miles in on the trail you'll come across a sign that reads "Ride at your own risk. Advanced Riders ONLY". This is the Little W. Va Trail and it's about a mile long. Sorry, I don't have a map. This trail is very technical and should only be used by experienced riders. Although all obstacles have a bypass, this trail is very fast and has some large drops and steep climbs. It has log jumps, rock gardens, a 5 ft. high log ride and a teeter totter to ride over. There is also a 8 ft drop ride into and out of a ravine. The Little W. VA trail rejoins the Tall Oaks trail.

The Tall Oaks trail is a lot a fun and is a pretty good workout. The trail joins the Box Turtle Trail (Green Trail) for the last mile or so and is a pretty easy ride out of the trail system. You'll end up at the trailhead and from here you can ride the Box Turtle trail or the Moral Ravine trail. Or head back out to the parking lot. Have fun and be safe.

Love hitting Pocahontas for some serious ups and downs, the pines, the singletrack, and for having the best variety within two hours of VB!
