Bikes must stay on the Hope Camp trail once inside the park
Overview
Yet another section of the AZ Trail. This section of singletrack is one of the easier sections of the AZ trail. It's an out an back, mostly downhill on the way out and a gradual climb on the way back.
Description
Head through the gate on the west side of the road. The trail immediately starts to gradually descend. It's a smooth trail with lots of twists and turns. Watch your speed as it's easy to get going too fast and blow through a corner or two.
At about 3.5 miles pass through another gate. The trail continues with more of the same type of terrain until you reach the wash. Be ready for a short steep descent with a switchback before crossing the wash and heading up a steep double switchback. This is the only technical part of the trail.
Climb up out of the wash and up to Hope Camp. There is a third and final gate to pass through before getting to Hope Camp. Stop for a rest on the benches under the trees, or continue to Cmo. Loma Alta trailhead and stop for a rest on the way back. From Hope Camp the singletrack disappears and the ride continues on a jeep road to the Cmo. Loma Alta trailhead.
The road has a rocky steep climb, followed by a rocky steep descent, followed by a gradual climb to the trailhead. Once at the gate for the Cmo. Loma Alta trailhead, take a quick break and head back to the Pistol Hill trailhead. Once past Hope Camp, this is mostly a climb for the remaining 5 miles.
This section of trail can also be done starting at Cmo. Loma Alta and head south to Pistol Hill. Connect this section of the AZ Trail with the Pistol Hill to Three Bridges section.
