Description
Sallie Barber Road (Summit County Road 559) was formally a mixed use road that was closed to motorized use as part of a recent update to the forest management plan for the area.
There is a small parking area and trailhead 3.8 miles up French Gulch Road.
From the trailhead, ride east a short way up French Gulch. Sallie Barber Road begins at a gate on the right side of the road. The trail descends briefly over
French Creek before beginning a gradual climb. Pass the newly completed
Turk's Trail extension 1/4 mile into the climb and Weber Gulch in another 1/2 mile. After a little over a mile of climbing the road tops out at the Sallie Barber Mine, an excellent viewpoint.
Both
Nightmare on Baldy (climbing steeply) and
Trail of Tears (flume trail) singletracks begin South of the road at the mine.
Continue southwest and descend on the steep road through Australia Gulch and below a power line. Use caution as spring runoff can result in significant washout and rutting of this section.
At the bottom of the descent, the road flattens to a fun, fast grade all the way to a gate. Pass through the gate onto pavement.
Barney Ford Trail is on the right (West) side of the road after the gate. Continue on Sallie Barber Road to Baldy Road.
Note there is no parking at the Western end of the road. Cross Baldy Road to access
Juniata Trail.
