This downhill is fast and gets you back into the boonies in a hurry. Once you're down, there is no is easy way back, civilization is far away, and cell phones don't work.
The start of the trail isn't obvious. Take the
Lost Trail - Saddle Mountain Road a little less than three miles to a fork (You are reentering Montana, yeah). Go left and 100 yards later there is a small pullout on the right. This is your trailhead.
The next two miles are the smoothest, fastest ride you'll find around Warm Springs. No one ever feels like stopping along this stretch, so I have never had a chance to play photographer.
Now enjoy three miles of mostly flat riding along the beaver ponds and meadows to the lookout at Overwhich Falls. Until you reach the falls, there isn't any way to get lost as long as you follow the water. Halfway to the fall, the
Shields Creek will link up. Keep heading down along the creek, and return some other day to check out the ridge crest riding that
Shields Creek offers.
After enjoying the view at Overwhich falls make sure to take the
Warm Springs Creek #103 to the right and not the Overwhich ATV trail which will take you to Painted Rock Reservior and far, far away from your car.
One warning This trail is notorious for downed trees so make sure someone has been down before you, or better yet bring a saw and help us out.
