Description
This is a great shorter trail near the
Engineer Mountain Trail and Colorado Trail that provides a lot of bang for the buck (the descent feels longer than it should for the climb). It makes for a nice and quick loop from the top of Coal Bank Pass.
To get there, park at Coal Bank Pass and ride up Pass Trail. Take a right on the
Engineer Mountain Trail then another right on Coal Creek. Follow the obvious trail to the right off of EMT. Keep right at the next split where Coal Creek heads right and
Deer Creek heads left. Awesome descent! Enjoy! Once on the road, ride back up to the starting point at the top of Coal Bank Pass.
One of the better descents in the San Juan's and a bang for your buck trail. Not only is it very sustained descent but it also rides like a bike trail and how you'd want a bike trail to ride. Others in the area can have more of a hiking trail taste to them however, Coal Creek, properly feels like a good fun bike trail. Some off cambers, intermittent roots, tight turns, high lines, hidden pulls for doubles, and more just brings a fat smile on your face every time you ride it.
