The Intermediate Trail at
Explore Park begins on the left side of the road that exits the park onto Rutrough Road, directly across the road from the end of the beginner loop.
After a short, fairly level route through the woods, the trail first descends down a fast, fun, and wide trail. A bit of this is shared with a hiking trail so be on the lookout for walkers. The hiking trail continues straight ahead at the first hairpin turn and from then on its all bikes. A second hairpin turn takes you down a gentle descent then flat along the side of a stream.
A fairly substantial bridge crosses the stream and signals a climb out of the valley. Immediately past the bridge is the most difficult part of this trail: a short, steep turn crossed by many roots. Be in a low gear and be prepared to lose some traction on the roots as you climb out.
A steady climb brings you to the junction of the Endurance Loop. Keep to the right to stay on the intermediate trail, which in short order will bring you to an old logging road. To ride the longer, outer loop trail, go across the road and stay to the right. To ride the inner loop, which is described below, turn left and descend down the logging road.
A fun descent down the logging road will bring you to the well-marked right turn onto the inner loop. If you see the "no bikes beyond this point" sign you know you've missed the turnoff.
The inner loop begins with a gentle, quick descent, then a climb back up to the logging road, back to the point where the outbound trail and logging road intersected. Again, you can turn left and take the outer loop, or go right, across the road, and trace your route back to the beginning of the trail.
