Description
Expect two-way traffic on this cross-country trail that connects Mid Vail to Patrol Headquarters at the top of chairs 4, 5, and 11. It's probably better as a climb (mostly because then you'll ready to descend the spectacular
Grand Traverse trail), but is good either way.
From Mid Vail, this trail starts at the same place as Kinnikinnick hiking trail. Start climbing immediately on intermediate terrain and make several switchbacks across ski runs and through flowers. The views of the Gore Range get better and better.
The grade then mellows out about a third of the way up and you'll follow some short sections of doubletrack service roads. Follow signs back to singletrack and finish up with fun switchbacks in dense trees between the ski runs.
If you ride this down, take care because there are no berms on the corners, and it's likely you'll see uphill or hiker traffic. It doesn't seem to be a particularly busy trail, but it's also not a downhill specific trail.
There are many great options from the top of this trail, such as descending
Grand Traverse or cruising out
Main Vail Road towards the Mongolia bowls and
Mill Creek Trail.
