Description
Sawmill Road (GH 22) - also known as Heinous Hill is a steep, unrelenting doubletrack road climb in the northwestern end of the Golden Horseshoe. This climb is a favorite for local race organizers who love to torture their participants.
Sawmill Road begins on
Preston Way (GH 23), but is best accessed from
Draw Road (GH 24) which begins on
Extension Mill Road just east of the eastern end of
Fall Classic Trail. The section between
Preston Way and
Draw Road is extremely rocky and loose.
At
Draw Road,
Fuller Trail (GH 44) terminates on the south side (right) of the trail as well. From this intersection climb steadily (with legs screaming) an average grade of 16%, passing an apparent junction at 1/3 mile on the right (another connection to the lower end of
Fuller Trail) then the
Dry Gulch Trail crossing at 1/2 mile.
This is approximately the midpoint of the climb from
Draw Road to Heinous Hill. Fortunately the climb "mellows" to an average 12% grade for the last 1/2 mile.
Congratulations for topping out one of the more difficult area climbs, and reaching the very heart of the Golden Horseshoe.
From the top of Heinous, pick your poison:
Golden Rule Trail descends to the eastern end of Lincoln Meadow;
Harum Trail can be used to access
Side Door; descend
Fuller Trail back to the bottom of the climb; feeling adventurous? descend
Summit Gulch Road (GH 74) north to
Galena Ditch Trail (warning this is an extremely steep, loose and rocky descent - i.e. not incredibly enjoyable).
