Note that the Box Crossing is not accessible in winter season when the lake level is higher and covers the bridge. In this case, the ride is an out and back on north side of river/lake.
Overview
This ride covers only a short section of the "cheese grater" rocks, and then drops into the prairies of the North Fork San Gabriel River.
The ride follows Booty's Road along the north banks of the river crossing over the North Fork San Gabriel River at Hunt Crossing/CR 258 and then turns east along the south banks of the North Fork San Gabriel River. Eventually, you'll cross the river again at Box Crossing and return back to Russell Park along the same route.
Description
Head west from the Russell Park Trailhead/parking lot. The trail starts with a fairly technical set of limestone step-downs. Then, for a short distance, the trail is packed gravel that leads up to several short sections of "cheese grader" rocks. This section is a good "skill builder" for the less experienced/beginner riders. Just before the trail drops into the prairies, there is a short technical section of tight, larger rocks with roots, then a downhill section of loose, flat rocks.
As the singletrack drops into the prairies of the North Fork San Gabriel River, turn right onto Booty's Road and begin the scenic, easy ride along the doubletrack. After passing Box Crossing, be on the lookout for the singletrack veering off to the left. This section rides the high banks of the North Fork San Gabriel River.
After returning to a short section of doubletrack, be on the lookout for a sharp left where the singletrack crosses a shallow creek and then passes through the prehistoric campsite.
After this short section of singletrack, turn left on CR 258 and cross over the North Fork San Gabriel River at Hunt Crossing. The trail begins behind the guard rail after the bridge, just before the entrance to Tejas Campground, with the restrooms on your right. Head east along the south banks of the river, with scenic views of the north banks to your left.
Follow the doubletrack as it turns into singletrack just before at Box Crossing. Here, you can either take the short, steep climb or ride along the banks of the river and cross at Box Crossing. After crossing over at Box Crossing, turn right and follow Booty's Road back to the singletrack that climbs and passes through the hand full of technical sections that lead back to Russell Park along the same trail.
History & Background
Several historical markers are along this route, telling about the history of 2 river crossings, a burned rock midden and a prehistoric campsite.
