Description
Buckeye Trail is one of the few legal singletrack trails in Mt. Diablo State Park. It's a gem and can be ridden in either direction. The trail follows the contours of the hill so it has a few dips where canyons and streams come through. Mostly it is just a great, level, flowy ride through hilly grassland with great views to the west and good sight lines everywhere.
To take the trail in the northerly direction, start at the southern end of
Stage Road (after it branches off of
BBQ Terrace Road. It is quite a climb to get here, but the trail is fairly level once you are there.
The trail comes close to North Gate Road in the middle and then continues a bit more before ending on
Burma Road - North Gate Road to Stage Road where it intersects North Gate Road.
Watch out for the second canyon when going this way. At about .5 miles in, the trail makes a right and heads down on a steep, loose, rutted surface. At the bottom there is an immediate left across a small stream bed and then it has a short steep up to be back to level. It's easy to get started down the hill without knowing what is ahead of you. If you're going too fast (like anything faster than a crawl for me) you may not be able to control your descent. I have seen lots of falls here!
