Overview
This ride was suggested by the owner of a local bike shop and I liked it so much, I had to share it!
This loop covers a lot of ground and is a fantastic way to get acquainted with what the area has to offer. The first and last parts are on the road but serve as a good warm up and cool down. Apart from that, it's really fun trail riding with a few exciting sections.
Description
There are several parking spots where you can start this ride from. We chose the parking lot at the
Chuckwagon trailhead off of Long Canyon rd. because it splits up the distance you have to ride on the road.
Head North on Long Canyon rd. for about half a mile to the Long Canyon trailhead. Go left on
Long Canyon Trail for 1 mile until you hit the
Deadmans Pass trail and go left. This section is a bit more difficult and is in a great setting with the Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness Area to the north. After about 1.3 miles you'll hit the Boynton Canyon trailhead and parking lot. Continue straight onto
Aerie. Climbing up Doe Mtn. is definitely the most exciting stretch, as the trail gets quite narrow in spots and is situated on a pretty steep slope. Enjoy the exposure and take in the views.
After you cross the Doe Mtn. trail, stay on
Aerie for another .7 miles until you come to the
Aerie trailhead. Here, you continue onto the
Cockscomb Trail. The next section is pretty chill for the most part, with a few rocky descents. After 2.5 miles you'll come to a confusing intersection where
Cockscomb meets the
Dawa Trail. The
Dawa Trail will come in from the right and then split off from
Cockscomb to the right. The mobile app will be helpful here to make sure you are on the correct leg of
Dawa Trail. In a little less than one mile you'll reach the
Dawa Trail and Boynton Pass rd. Take a right onto the road and then continue straight onto Long Canyon rd to get back to your car!
