Description
The trail is not yet on the popular National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map #792 (Massanutten and Great North Mountain). The trail is blazed and in very good condition. The trail serves as connection between Crooked Run Road (VA State Road # 720) and the
Laurel Run Spur Trail (Trail #568A) which has been used for timber operations.
When accessing from the southern end, (where you would pick up the trail if your goal is to access the
Laurel Run Trail as part of the
Northern Traverse ride) you'll find the trail at a switchback off of Crooked Run Road.
This connector is narrow and rocky in sections, and loses elevation when first heading north. After almost a mile, you'll arrive at a clearing for a natural gas line that goes up and over Great North Mountain. Depending on the season and the maintenance schedule that the gas line has experienced, the vegetation may be cut very low or the growth may create a clear delineation of the trail. Whatever the season, you'll head east (down) the gas line for less than a quarter of a mile until the trail crosses the gas line clearing and enters the tree line on the north side.
Once through the trees you'll be on the
Laurel Run Spur Trail (Trail #568A). Immediately after leaving the gas line there is a rocky drainage crossing, so stay on your toes.
