Description

This trail is easily connected to the Brown Mountain Loop. From the Juan Santa Cruz Picnic area, follow the road to Kinney Rd. Take Kinney Rd to the first paved pull out on your left and the Cougar Trail trailhead is right there. You might not know there is a trail if you aren't looking for it. You can follow Cougar, but it takes a keen sense to see the beginning part of the trail in some parts.

From Kinney Rd the trail starts to climb and wind up the hillside. A few tricky spots present themselves around some rocks and then it's smooth sailing until the short hike-a-bike section just ahead. Instead of the usual winding and switchbacks, this trail chooses to go straight up, and then straight down again. This makes sense, since it basically follows the power lines. Be prepared for lots of loose rocks, and because this trail appears to be rarely traveled, overgrown bushes area waiting to get you. With careful maneuvering all sharp bushes and cactus are avoidable.

Once you arrive at the power lines, it's a grand up and down journey, well worth the search to get there. The utility company was silly enough to attempt to drive a huge boom truck down one of the tight gullies. That truck is probably still hung up there. It will take some heavy winching to get that out! Cool hills, very enjoyable. Watch out for that tree at the bottom of the gully. It will jump right in front of you. Talk about fun!

Keep heading east on the trail until it dead ends at a T. Turn right and cruise downhill on an easy doubletrack back to Kinney Rd.

Cactus is overgrown on the part of Cougar Trail where it meets Kinney Road, making it difficult to get up and down those big hills. Pretty tight fit.

Ups and downs under the power lines make the journey worth it! Some fun.

Not fun prior to the ringtail intersection, but after that it’s pretty cool 3.1mi

Some steep descents and climbs with lots of loose gravel. There were a good chunk of spots we had to hop off and walk, but a fun trail anyways.
