Description
One of the most notable trails in western Pennsylvania due to its length and combination of challenging ascents, fun descents and "deep in the forest" feel. The trail actually parallels Skyline road along the ridge top, so the remote feeling is a bit of an illusion. There is also a not-to-be-missed view point just before the final challenging descent to the Lick Hollow Picnic area.
Typically, Whitetail is ridden starting at the south end. There are multiple options for how to set it up as a loop ride. One excellent option is
Quebec Odyssey which uses road riding for the return.
Whitetail starts at the North parking area of the Quebec Run area, which also has trailheads for
Hess Trail and
Miller Trail. The first real stream crossing is at Long run, where the Long Run trail goes off to the right. Instead cross the stream continuing with a long climb up the other side. As it tops out, there will be a short descent then a pipeline cut crossing. After awhile, the trail crosses Skyline road where you'll pass a parking area that could be used for shuttles. After the road crossing, the trail is exceptionally fun as it twists and turns through trees, roots and rocks. The next notable feature is the descent to Redstone creek, where you end up on an old logging road. At this point look for the singletrack down to the creek crossing (don't ride down the road).
After crossing the creek, there will be some climbing before you arrive at a doubletrack which you need to descend on for awhile. Continue on with the descent following the blazes alongside and looking for the point where the singletrack continues off to the right. Shortly thereafter you'll arrive at the junction with
Pine Knob Trail. Just before the final descent to the right on Pine Knob trail, take the left to check out the Pine Knob overlook. Then return to the descent to Lick Hollow Picnic area. This descent is challenging fun. Lots of makeable rock garden on a side-hill. The Lick Hollow Picnic area is nicely situated with ample parking and toilets.
