Description
Mule Ear Trail can be ridden either direction, but I think it's best ridden clockwise, especially when doing the whole loop with
Mule Shoe Trail first, as you end the ride with a downhill via Mule Ear Trail instead of a one mile Mule Shoe uphill when riding counterclockwise. The ride starts at the SW North Fork Park Road right across the road where
Mule Shoe Trail ends. Mule Ear is on the uphill side of the SW North Fork Road and both entry and exit trails are on the left side of the road.
This trail starts with a few switchback climbs; then at mile .40, the ST trail on the right takes you to the DT Mule Ear jeep trail back to the SW North Fork Park Road. Mule Ear has a good 1.4-mile climb with lots of switchbacks, and the high point (ST on left side) is near the viewpoint on Cold Creek Overlook out and back trail at 6500.
This trail has quite a few tight switchbacks on the downhill for about 1.20 miles making it an upper-intermediate technical level. Close to the end of the Mule Ear Trail, you'll cross another ST trail that goes back to the south TH of Mule Ear or north towards Cutler Spring Trail and goes along the North Fork Park Road. As you exit to the NW North Fork Park road, cross the road to
Mule Shoe Trail and take the first left ST trail back to the parking lot.
This trail is famous for house riders so be cautious and stop for them as you plunge DH with a big smile on your face.
