I called the Missoula Ranger District on 7/9/18. They said that this trail is closed all of 2018. They also said the Mormon Creek Road will open on July 16, 2018. In future years, it might go back to opening in May 15.

Need to Know

Much more enjoyable with a shuttle up Mormon Peak Road.

Description

This trail is much rockier than typically found around Missoula. The climb to Carlton is semi-technical with tight switchbacks and awesome views at the top. Descend back down and don't miss the left-hand turn onto Mill Creek Trail. This is one of the best descents around with steeps, rock gardens, and fast ridgeline trail. The trail is a bit tricky to follow at the bottom but just keep an eye out at each logging road crossing and you'll find your way.

You can ride as a loop by parking at Fort Fizzle on Hwy 12 and riding the long & dusty Mormon Peak Road up to Lolo Peak trailhead.
