Description
Mesa Trail #13 can be accessed from the main trailhead or
Mesa Trail #13A. The section shown as an out-and-back is fun when ridden downhill, but includes some hike-a-bike if heading uphill.
The mesa loop (eastern segment of the trail) is an intermediate cross-country trail. It is faint due to low traffic, with some loose rocks, but the grades are fairly constant. There are rock cairns along the way to assist with way-finding. The view from the eastern viewpoint is worth the ride, and the north section of the loop is challenging when ridden counter-clockwise as shown.
The technical downhill section starts out smooth and flowy, then gets very steep and loose with water bars for an additional technical challenge. Once the trail joins the arroyo, it's character is more chunky and technical. The final section leading from the arroyo to the road is smoother and relatively fast with some tall waterbars.
As with most Socorro area trails, Mesa Trail is pretty rustic and raw. You'll be rewarded with some solitude for your efforts. Some way-finding should be expected on the mesa loop and some walking should be expected on the uphill climb.
