A nice, well-groomed wide trail, designed to have a consistent 5% grade, well maintained and well marked. Might be difficult for younger children.
Will become uphill only in the future, watch out for hikers and runners.
Description
This trail can be accessed from the Hixon Forest parking lot in La Crosse. With varied singletrack and sections that are doubletrack, the entire trail is Bobcat bench cut. There are some steep sections, but overall the trail mixes in some downhill segments nicely as you climb for a break. It is mostly hardpacked with a few rocky sections and one sandy corner. The trail has a 5% average grade but is still a killer climb. There are also several offshoots that look like trails, but the only officially marked one is at the top and is a difficult trail that connects into Vista Trail by the overlook.
Once you reach the top of the trail you can turn right on Rim of the City Rd and then right on County Hwy FA which you can follow for about 5 minutes to the Human Powered Trails trailhead( HPT locals loop) to make it a longer ride. Fun, flowy trail on the way down, easy to pick up a lot of speed. Make sure to stop at one of the overlooks for a break and take in some of the beautiful views this route offers.
The trail is currently uphill and downhill for bikes, but once the new TNT/downhill trail is built the trail will be uphill only for bikes. It is common to run into hikers or runners, just remember to yield to them and slow it down as you pass.
Overall, a beautiful trail with some great views, and a blast to ride.
