This is a relatively flat trail for this area. Wide tread makes it easy to put a foot down. Optional features along the trail can help to build skills. A nice short out and back (2.3 miles total).
Description
Use this connector trail when starting your ride at Buttermilk Ski Area's main parking lot and heading towards
Airline Trail and the rest of Sky Mt. Park's trail system. Better yet, find your way from downtown Aspen along the Midland trail,
Marolt Open Space connector,
Moore Open Space trail, and
Oregon Trail, before dropping down to the parking lot area using
Buttermilk Mountain Summer Work Road.
The trail generally follows the alignment of a historic ditch that is parallel to Owl Creek Rd., the
Owl Creek Trail (paved bike path), and the Airport runway. You'll encounter oak brush, sage meadows, and good views. While the alignment is close to the busy roadway, you don't see the road as much as you might expect from looking at the map.
The trail features a few short climbs, a few sweeping turns, some fun grade reversals, and a number of rocks that can be used as jumps or drops.
At the northern end of the trail, be very careful when crossing Owl Creek Rd. to join the
Owl Creek Trail. The roadway is frequently busy with high-speed traffic.
