Description
Bull of the Woods Road begins at the Northside at Taos Ski Valley trailhead and is the most direct route up Bull of the Woods Mountain. From the gate at the top of the Phoenix Switchback road continue north for 1.2 miles, climbing the steep 1st and 2nd Mothers and continue across Jean's Meadow.
Riders will then climb up to a Y-junction with the
Frazer Mountain Road. At this junction, turn left, climb the steep 3rd Mother, then enjoy the ride as the road mellows out for the next mile to the Red River Overlook.
After enjoying the views of the
Middle Fork Trail/Forest Road 487 valley, continue up the road as it meanders through the forest, across some open rock outcrops with stellar views of Taos Ski Valley and the Columbine-
Hondo Wilderness. The views and beauty don't stop as you climb to a saddle between Bull of the Woods and Frazer Mountains.
At this saddle, head left then left again at the junction with
Malachite Trail. The road becomes rocky as it enters the alpine and ends where some bristlecone pines have set root on a windy ledge. The mountain's summit is just above here, and it's well worth the short hike to great 360 views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
