Overview
This is one of the very best rides around, with some fun singletrack over a long and varied day. This route combines high-altitude alpine scenery with great cross-country terrain. The first part is the
Mountain Home Trail (Loch Leven). Once at the top, you'll ride behind the Angelus Oaks Post Office on a fireroad for a bit. From there, you catch the Santa Ana River Trail: 2E03 Post Office section to
Middle Control Road, which will bring you back up to 38 and Angelus Oaks.
Need to Know
There's a creek crossing on the Loch Leven climb, followed by a steep hike-a-bike section. The SART section has a few hike-a-bike parts on the lowest part of the trail. The Oaks Restaurant is located at the the top of the climb in Angelus Oaks. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Description
Parking is off the north side of Hwy 38 just before the Loch Leven Conference Center on Mountain Home Village Road.
Mountain Home Trail trail starts out on asphalt which was once the original State Hwy 38. It's mostly an easy climb up to Angelus Oaks with one creek crossing and a short hike-a-bike section.
Once you reach the top, go out next to the post office on a fireroad for a mile. You'll reach an open clearing off the fireroad where you'll catch the Santa Ana River Trail: 2E03 Post Office. The SART is kind of overgrown at the top and there may be some fallen trees and a few hike-a-bike spots on the lowest section. SART then dumps you out onto
Middle Control Road, which you'll take south, up to the Hwy 38. Once at the highway, you'll turn right and ride back into Angelus Oaks on the highway. From there, you just ride down to Loch Leven the way you came up.
