Family Friendly As long as you take the Varnum Woods bypass through the field instead of the steep switchbacks into the ravine, it is family-friendly. My 5 year old passed it on her own bike.

Construction on Sullivan's Bridge at the downriver end of the trail may impede access. Park at Washington's Headquarters (or at the chapel and pick up the trail in the middle).

Description

This trail runs from Washington's Headquarters area to the abandoned Valley Forge Park Train Station. It follows the Schuylkill River and passes behind Washington Memorial Chapel. Most of the trail is easy with one section of steep switchbacks. A portion of this trail at the bottom of the ravine has been washed out. However, this section can easily be replaced with a easier rolling path by taking the side trail towards Varnum's Woods.

This is not a super scenic trail, but it gets you away from the crowds on the main loops. This trail is popular for horses and hikers and, at times, tracks closely to the railroad tracks.

The trail connects with the Joseph Plumb Martin Trail and connects to Betzwood Park by taking Sullivan Bridge is over the Schuylkill River. From Betzwood park you can easily take the Schuylkill River Trail: Philadelphia City Line to Phoenixville, River Trail and/or Commissary Trail .

This climb is made much more complicated by the steps built into the trail.
