Description

Juniper Ridge is a tough ridgeline traverse of three peaks (Juniper, Sunrise, Jumbo) with 360° views. It's ambitious and can be done as an out-and-back or combined with other trails as a shuttle ride.

From the north end, the trail starts on FR 2904 and climbs steadily to Juniper Peak through open pine forest. Once the trail gains the ridge, the views open up all the way to the southern end. Once past the peak, the route continues to follow the ridgeline, descending and then climbing steeply around the western flanks of Sunrise Peak.

Hold on for another steep descent and then start the final climb to the base of Jumbo Peak, a big and blocky mass surrounded by scree. The trail skirts the west side of the peak and then runs along the ridge above Dark Meadow Trail #263.

The final portion of the descent works through tight switchbacks and then meets Dark Meadow Trail #263. Continue straight to pedal through rolling terrain to Dark Meadow, a beautiful spot with excellent views and a chance to sample some black huckleberries.

The meadow is also the southern terminus of the trail, intersecting with Boundary Trail #1.

Shuttle Option:
Ride Boundary Trail #1 from the eastern end at Council Lake east. Turn right on Juniper Ridge Trail #261 and pedal through Dark Meadow to the base of the climb to Jumbo Peak. Stay right on Dark Meadow Trail #263 and enjoy a continuous descent to FR 23.
