Description

The North Powder River Trail is an old wagon road that travels from the headwaters of the North Powder River to the Elkhorn Crest NRT #1611.

Start from the Summit Lake Trailhead and contour for the first mile up along the northwest slope above the river, beneath large trees and across open sagebrush and grass-covered slopes. Further up you'll pedal through rocky stream bed.

Beyond the Lost Lake Trail intersection, the route crosses wet meadows and tree stands with wide views of the entire river drainage.

Stay left on the Elkhorn Crest NRT #1611 to avoid the North Fork of the John Day Wilderness.
