Description
First off, this trail requires a long trip to reach the start.
Prior to the trailhead, you must climb over 2,000 vertical feet. After this climb, which you may do from either direction, you reach the intersection with a posted trail marker (wood post with hardscrabble trail sign).
Prior to 2024, there was a brutal hike-a-bike to get to the top of the trail. As of October 24' thanks to a collaborative effort from the Hardscrabble Trail Coalition and the Vail Valley Mountain Trails Alliance there is now a climbable singletrack to get to the top. It is still a steep lung buster, but a whole lot better than having your bike on your back.
From this point, you are nearly on top of the mountains. The trail is all downhill from here.
The trail continues as all singletrack that weaves through the higher alpine forest. There are some rock and root areas and one steeper, seemingly washed out area that can become a little tricky. After this, you cross a stream and the trail mellows out a bit.
The trail ends as it connects back into
Spring Creek Road directly across from
Reynolds Wrap. This is an easy place to connect to either
Itch or
Scratch.
