Trails typically open for riding in mid June
Overview
Shafer Butte makes the highest point within Bogus Basin Resort. This loop consists of almost entirely singletrack and takes you near the top of the mountain. These trails are fast, fun, and narrow. Even though this loop is less crowded than the
Around the Mountain ride, be aware that you'll encounter hikers and bikers traveling in both directions.
Description
From the Simplot Lodge, head up
Deer Point Trail (91). When you encounter
Around the Mountain, stay left on
Deer Point Trail (91). At the end of Deer Point, cross the road and continue onto
Elk Meadows Trail (94). This climbs through a few technical sections before briefly meeting the road again; follow the trail to the right.
The next section of Elk Meadows is gorgeous, and at the right time of year, you'll be riding through fields of wildflowers. At the end of the trail, you'll meet a road; bear left and start climbing.
Skip the first steep left turn, then take a sharp left onto the
Pack Trail (149). This road winds to the top of Superior Lift, from which you'll descend on
The Face (93).
The Face starts right under the lift, and descends through some technical features before meeting
Tempest Trail (95). Unless you like terribly-constructed switchbacks, stay left on
The Face and follow it back to the road.
You'll now be at the middle intersection of Elk Meadows and the road; turn right and retrace your steps to the top of
Deer Point Trail (91).
From here, bear right on
Brewers Byway (96) (make sure not to take Shindig by mistake). Race back across the mountain to just above the Pioneer Lodge. From here you'll get to choose your adventure on the downhill trails. Take
Student Rider for a fun, flowy option that's not too hard. Or take your pick from any of the intermediate or more difficult options. Any of them take you back to Simplot Lodge, drinks, and food.
