Overview
One of the best rides in Panama, from near sea-level to a volcano crater in 60+km.
Need to Know
There is a 30-45 min hike-a-bike and quite a bit of loose, rocky singletrack.
Description
You can start this loop from either Rio Hato and go up to El Valle through Las Guias or, if you're at El Valle already, start with the downhill :), just be prepared to ride back uphill around midday.
Take lots of water, I usually recommend a portable water filter, but not everyone has one. You can ask for water in surrounding houses along the trail, but it's probably not treated water.
There are a few river crossings and a stop at the El Retiro waterfall is a welcome break point after the downhill. There are about 20km of asphalt road in the loop; we have yet to find a better alternative, luckily the road has very little vehicle use.
