Minimal features and non-technical tread makes this an ideal first-timer outing.
Description
Access this trail either from the bottom up or top down. If starting from the bottom up, begin at the locked gate at the Shellburg Falls trailhead on Fern Ridge Road. Pedal one mile up the Shellburg Road.
Shortly past the bridge over the lower falls, look for the August Mountain Trail on your left; it's signed. The trail is smooth and fast with a compact dirt and pine needle surface. A few roots makes things interesting.
The trail climbs while contouring around a few switchbacks until it crosses over an old forest road. From the forest road, descend on overgrown doubletrack before bottoming out at Shellburg Creek. Stay left after crossing a wooden bridge.
After crossing another bridge or riding through the creek, you'll pop out of the forest at road SB 200 and the start of the
Shellburg Creek Trail. Linking
Shellburg Creek Trail to the next trail,
Lost Creek Trail, maximizes riding in the area.
Lost Creek Trail eventually links up with the
Perimeter Trail at Silver Falls State Park for a longer outing. Grab a map at the trailhead or use the
MTB Project mobile app to navigate the area.
Santiam State Forest does an amazing job of maintaining the trails at Shellburg. Respect their wishes to stay off the trails during rainy, muddy days.
