Description

Start at the parking lot on Encinal Canyon Road and follow the singletrack up about five miles of not very steep switchbacks to Backbone Trail: Etz Meloy Bypass.

In this direction, the singletrack is almost entirely uphill, but if you follow the route of the Backbone Trail: Encinal Canyon ride, the return back to Encinal Canyon Road is super fun. Otherwise, you could take a left and ride as far as you want on fire road; you can ride all the way to the ocean if you have the stamina!
