Parts of Maplelag are open in the winter to ride fat bikes on but PLEASE do not ride on any of the groomed cross country ski trails. Stick to the groomed fat bike trails in the Twin Lakes section unless otherwise noted. This trail is for winter use only when snow covered.

Overview

Maplelag provides a premier mountain biking trail system in the summer and fall, featuring trails for all levels of ability. There are wide open ski trail segments and tight, cross-country singletrack with challenging drops for the most technical riders. The resort is constantly adding new trail segments, so come by the lodge to find out more info.

Need to Know

Fat bikes are NOT allowed on the cross country ski trails.

Every year on Labor Day weekend, Maplelag puts on the "Laddies Loppet" mountain bike race. This race has been going strong since 1990 and is currently a stop on the Minnesota Mountain Bike Series schedule.

Description

Maplelag Resort is a unique place to ride mountain bike year round. This gem in Northwest Minnesota features almost everything for mountain bikers. It is located in a largely wooded area with rolling hills and many rocks and roots throughout.

It starts with the Lake Drops section which is old-school singletrack that is tight, steep, and technical. After Lake Drops, you'll find a few steep, punchy climbs, the most notorious being Suicide Hill, a ~70ft ascent at an average grade of ~10%.

After many of these climbs, you do get rewarded (slightly) with a fast, tight, fun downhill. They don't last very long, however, and you usually find yourself looking up at another climb at the end. In this way, Maplelag will challenge your fitness as there is not a lot of time to catch your breath between climbs.

Eventually, you'll cross the road that takes you into the resort and begin the Twin Lakes Loop portion of trail, which is super flowing and sure to put a smile on your face. Pete's Porkie and Hudson's Hula are two fun, named sections that make up most of this area of trail.

Maplelag does offer groomed winter fat bike riding in the Twin Lakes Loop section of the trail. It is important to note that Maplelag is a large cross country ski destination in the winter with a large network of groomed cc ski trails.
