Description
This is the main trail leaving the Brown's Ranch Trailhead. It is an old road that begins by traveling north, starting with alternating gentle ups and downs. There are slightly sandy spots (which seem common on trails that used to be roads), but none of these are deep or troublesome with a little care. This part is busy with hiker and bike traffic, but is wide enough for easy passing.
After about .75 miles, the trail begins to slowly bend around to the west around the north side of Brown's Mountain. From here it gently slopes downhill until its intersection with the
Hawknest Trail. Along this section, it braids in and out of a sandy wash. The better routes are usually on one side or other of the wash. None of the crossings are difficult.
Beyond the
Hawknest Trail, the trail continues to the west until ending at the
West Express Trail.
Between the Trailhead and the
West Express, the trail passes 11 different trail intersections, making this trail useful for starting and/or ending any number of loop routes. See the Scottsdale City map to lay out a route here:
