Description
This steep and technical trail down the west side of Pike's Peak offers an alternate descent from the top. Views of distant mountain ranges can be seen from the top, the Sawatch Range, Tenmile Range, Mosquito Range, and even the Sangre de Cristo Range.
The trail descent begins at the top of Pike's Peak. The first mile is a series of steep switchbacks through Pike's granite scree. Knobby, wide tires, fresh brake pads and body protection is recommended.
The next mile and a half runs parallel to the Pike's Peak Toll road. Views to the north and east are spectacular. This portion is relatively flat. At mile 2.6, the trail crosses the toll road into Devil's Playground, an area of hoodoos formed of granite which crystallized over a billion years ago.
At mile 3.5, the trail steeply descends from 12,700 ft to 10,400 ft over two miles. This steep descent will test your will and brakes, earning the trail a double black diamond.
The last mile and a half levels out, joining
The Crags Trail to end at the Crags Trailhead/Devil's Playground Parking lot.
